National Miniature Parks for Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and the Gulf: An Open-Air Museum of Heritage and Islamic Culture

Imagine walking through an entire country in a single afternoon: its historic city gates, its old souqs, its mosques and palaces, its traditional houses and the everyday life of its people – all in perfect scale, under the open sky. This is what a national miniature park offers. At MiniatureArt we have spent more than 25 years designing and building such parks, and today we see the Gulf and the wider Islamic world as the most exciting place for the next generation of them.

What is a national miniature park?

A national miniature park is an open-air museum that tells the story of a nation through scale models. Miniatürk in İstanbul, one of the parks we worked on, is a good example: it brings together the architectural treasures of a whole civilisation in one walkable landscape. But a national park is more than a collection of famous buildings. It can also show folklore, traditions and daily life – a wedding procession, a market day, fishermen and pearl divers, camel caravans, craftsmen at work – with hundreds of hand-painted figures that bring each scene to life.

Parks can be fully open-air, indoor, or a combination of both. For the Gulf we especially recommend open-air parks combined with landscaped gardens, shaded walkways, water features and evening lighting, so that families can visit in the cooler hours and after sunset.

Built for desert heat: models that last for years outdoors

The biggest question we hear from Gulf clients is simple: will the models survive our climate? Our answer is yes – because we design them for it from the very first day.

  • Heat resistance: our outdoor models are engineered for surface temperatures of up to 80 °C, which is what a dark roof or a stone façade can reach under the summer sun in the Gulf.
  • UV-stable materials and paints: we use polyurethane boards that we produce in our own factory, together with outdoor-grade, UV-resistant paints and coatings, so colours do not fade and surfaces do not crack.
  • Sand, dust and humidity: details are designed to be cleaned easily, and joints and electrical parts are sealed against dust and coastal humidity.
  • Why not 3D printing alone? 3D printing is a great tool for prototypes, but most printing materials are still not mature enough to last for many years outdoors in extreme heat. We use it where it makes sense and rely on proven materials for everything exposed to the sun.

Our experience in Kuwait: Al Shaheed Park

For Al Shaheed Park in Kuwait City we recreated the soul of old Kuwait. We built the traditional houses where local families lived, and around 35–40 models of present-day and historic Kuwait: the gates of Kuwait City, the historic city walls, the souqs – the traditional markets – and many other landmarks that tell the story of the country before and after the discovery of oil. Visitors can see, in one place, how Kuwait grew from a walled trading port into a modern capital.

Ideas for Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iraq and the region

The same approach can be adapted to any country in the region. A few examples of what such a park could include:

  • Saudi Arabia: the mud-brick heritage of At-Turaif in Diriyah, the Nabataean tombs of Hegra (AlUla), historic Jeddah (Al-Balad) with its coral-stone houses and wooden rawashin balconies, traditional Najdi villages, desert forts and caravan routes. We have also produced architectural models for the expansion of the Masjid al-Haram, so we know how much care sacred and historic architecture deserves.
  • Qatar: the old pearling and fishing heritage, traditional dhows, Souq Waqif, historic forts and the transformation of Doha into a modern capital.
  • Iraq: a park celebrating Mesopotamian and Islamic civilisation – a project for a city such as Najaf, with its great shrine and historic old town, could become a major cultural destination for millions of visitors.
  • Oman, the UAE, Egypt and others: forts, souqs, wind towers, Islamic Cairo and the traditional architecture of each country.

A park that celebrates Islamic culture

Islamic architecture – its mosques, minarets, domes, madrasas, caravanserais and markets – is one of the richest architectural heritages in the world. A miniature park can present it to children, families and tourists in an accessible, educational and respectful way. Our team has built detailed models of masterpieces such as the Selimiye, Süleymaniye and Şehzade mosques by Mimar Sinan, and we would be honoured to bring the heritage of the Arabian Peninsula and the Islamic world to life in the same way.

Turnkey: from concept to opening day

We work turnkey: master plan and concept design, selection of models with local historians, production in our 4,500 m² factory in İstanbul, shipping, landscaping, lighting, installation and long-term maintenance. Animatronic figures, light-and-sound shows and interactive screens can be added to make the park even more engaging.
