Minimundi Walcheren: A High-Density Miniature and Family Entertainment Park
In 2010, MiniatureArt undertook the comprehensive renovation of Minimundi Walcheren miniature park, a private park in Middelburg, the Netherlands. Originally located right in the city centre, the park moved to the outskirts of the city by strategic decision. This move provided space for a modern, multi-purpose main building. As a result, the attraction grew into a family destination that blends architectural heritage with classic rides.
Masterful Details in a High-Density Exhibition
100+ Models in a Compact Footprint: Despite its relatively small exhibition area, Minimundi features an incredibly dense collection of more than 100 meticulously crafted scale models. The entire collection reproduces the architectural charm of the city of Middelburg and the surrounding Walcheren region.
Smart Hardscape Engineering: To maximise space without creating visual clutter, we designed the miniature zone with a unique spatial layout. Instead of traditional soil landscaping between buildings, we integrated the models directly into continuous hard surfaces.
Perimeter Landscaping and Water Features: To balance the structured hardscape, lush perimeter landscaping and calm reflecting pools border the main exhibition and frame the scaled city.
Integrated Indoor and Outdoor Family Entertainment Hubs
- New Main Building (Indoor Hub): The relocation allowed the construction of a spacious entrance facility that serves as the heart of the park. It houses a lively indoor play area for young children, an enchanting fairy-tale exhibition, a fully equipped cafeteria and a gift shop.
- Classic Amusement Zones: Complementing the miniature exhibits, the outdoor areas feature a dedicated mechanical amusement park. For family fun, it includes a classic carousel, a panoramic Ferris wheel and a family roller coaster. Thus, Minimundi is a complete all-day destination in Northern Europe.
Renovating and Expanding the Minimundi Walcheren Miniature Park
The Minimundi project is an example of reorganising an architectural collection in a new visitor area. In such work, we address the condition of existing models, transport, installation, the new layout and the visitor route together. New models to be added to the collection are also considered within the same exhibition concept.
