Every Miniature Needs Maintenance One Day
Miniature parks are open-air museums. While a real building is maintained every day, its 1:25 scale replica is often left on its own for years. Yet at small scale every defect is far more visible: a crack you would never notice on the real building can spoil an entire façade on a model. These are the situations we encounter most often on site:
- UV and weather: Fading paint on sun-facing façades, colours turning flat and lifeless; varnish and protective coats wearing away over time.
- Freeze–thaw cycles: Water that seeps into the material freezes in winter, causing cracks, blistering and detachment – especially on roofs and eaves.
- Vandalism and accidents: Broken domes and minarets, statues and figures torn off, scratched or spray-painted surfaces. We also help repair vandalism damage and remanufacture missing parts true to the original.
- Ground and landscaping effects: Cracks and shifting in model bases and miniature grounds caused by irrigation water, settlement and root pressure.
- Old and worn fairy tale characters: Worn paint, broken fingers, noses and accessories on figures that children touch, climb on and pose with.
When building a new model is not an option due to budget, time or historical value, restoration becomes essential. With the right restoration, a piece built years ago can once again become the most photographed corner of your park.
Restoration Is More Than Filler and Paint
A scene we often come across: a cracked model, quickly patched with filler and painted over. It looks fine for the first few weeks. But because the filler does not have the same flexibility and thermal expansion as the base material, at the first hot–cold cycle the filler blisters, cracks and falls off. The result looks worse than before the repair – and the damage underneath has grown, because water keeps getting in.
A proper repair starts with identifying the cause. Loose and degraded material is removed completely, the area is re-carved with materials compatible with the main body or the part is remanufactured from scratch, built up layer by layer with primer and exterior-grade paints, and finally sealed with a UV-resistant protective coat.
Painting is a job for specialists, too. In many parks we see miniatures painted in a single flat colour, like a house wall. A miniature painted this way loses the texture of stone, the traces of time, shadow and depth. In short, it loses its soul and meaning.
For example, a model of a historic mosque requires different tones, patina and ageing techniques for its lead-covered domes, cut-stone walls and marble details. On a fairy tale character, the facial expression, skin tone and fabric texture define the figure’s personality. Damage is rarely just cosmetic; in most cases the part has to be remanufactured from scratch.
From time to time we are called in to rescue low-quality work produced by standard architectural model makers. Damage that appears only a few months after installation is usually caused by the wrong materials, the wrong adhesives and paints not suited for outdoor use. In such cases our first task is to report honestly which parts can be repaired and which must be remanufactured.

The People Who Did This May Knock on Your Door One Day
The photos below were taken in a miniature park shortly after installation. Scattered roof coverings, detached panels, open joints, water-swollen bases… These models were produced by companies that bid saying “we can do the same job cheaper”.
